Pink Noise for Sleep

What is pink noise?

Pink noise contains all the frequencies we can hear, but with less energy in the high ones than white noise. Each octave has the same amount of energy, which our ears perceive as balanced. The result sounds less sharp than white noise and less deep than brown noise.

Many natural sounds, like steady rain, rustling leaves and a waterfall heard from a distance, are close to pink noise.

Does pink noise help with sleep?

Like other steady sounds, pink noise masks sudden noises and gives the brain one simple, unchanging thing to listen to. Some small studies in adults have looked at pink noise and deep sleep; the results are interesting but not conclusive, and there is no research showing children need it. Use it because your child likes it, not as a treatment.
