Why waves calm us down
Waves come and go every few seconds, a rhythm close to slow, relaxed breathing. Without trying, many children start breathing along with them. The sound also has no words and no melody to follow, so there is nothing to keep a tired brain busy.
Ocean sounds are a good choice for children who find plain white noise boring but are woken by sudden household sounds.
A small breathing game with the waves
Ask your child to breathe in as a wave comes in and breathe out as it goes back. Three or four waves is enough. It's the same idea as the breathing flower in Droply's Breathe mode: something to follow, so breathing slows down by itself.

Rain is more even; waves have a clear rhythm. Children who like to breathe along often prefer waves, while light sleepers often do better with rain or white noise.
Can I use ocean sounds for a baby?
Many parents do. Keep the volume very low and the speaker well away from the cot, and follow your health visitor's or paediatrician's advice on sound machines.
